Letter about a dog

Hi,
Got your mail. in which you say you never hear from me. I send out reams of
stuff almost incessantly. Admittedly, a lot of it's in Spanish, and
increasingly so, as many of the people I send it to don't speak English;
also the subject matter of a lot of it is general. But I do also write
fairly often in English and, if not specifically about myself, at least
about some of the things I'm engaged in. Anyway you ought to revive a bit of
your ailing, or virtually non-existent- Spanish if you're thinking of
travelling to these parts at some point. You might get by with English at
most places, say 4 or 5-star hotels. You could probably get by with sign
language or smoke-signals too, if you put your mind to it, but you'd be
likely to miss out on some of the subtler nuances.

Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald

Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald

The Stewart dynasty came to an end with the ouster of James II (VII of
Scotland) and the accession of William III (of Orange-Nassau) in 1689. The
reasons for James' unpopularity and the fall of the Stuarts, as the name is
often spelt, were basically two: a) his absolutism, verging on tyranny, in
keeping with the fashion of the age; and b) his conversion to Catholicism
and the attempt to re-establish this religion in Britain. Hence the Battle
of the Boyne episode, where the Stuart cause was espoused by the Irish
catholics, as well as many Scots of that persuasion. James, as is known, was
thoroughly thrashed in that action, the consequences of which continue down
to the present day, specifically in the Northern Ireland conflict.

The Rule
Before launching into the subject, it might not be unwise to remind the reader of the very apt rule governing the written accent (diacritic) in Spanish, which always indicates the stressed syllable, and eliminates pretty much all guesswork as to pronunciation. (In this sense it is even more precise and phonetic than German, which is somewhat haphazard as regards stresses.)

TURKEY AND THE EUROPEAN UNION

At present Turkey's accession to membership of the European Union is being debated. One of the stumbling-blocks is purportedly Turkey's continuing refusal to recognize the Armenian genocide at all, let alone in its true proportions. This, though the Armenians clutch onto it as a winning card, merely confuses the issue. Turkey should not become a member at all, at least for now, and for three or four reasons:
